ARCHITECH AND CIVIL ENGG

Letter from Mimar Sinan to 400 years later.  The legend of letters written 400 years later appears before everyone who is curious about the life of Mimar Sinan.  Whenever there is a program about Mimar Sinan, this question comes to mind.  Did Mimar Sinan really hide a letter in a bottle that would be read in 400 years?  Let's recall this legend that even managed to enter secondary school textbooks. An interesting event occurs during the restoration of the Åžehzadebaşı Mosque, a work of Mimar Sinan, in the 1990s.  The civil engineer of the company that made the restoration describes his experiences in a TV program as follows  “There were rotting in places on the stones forming the arches above the doors on the money line wall surrounding the garden of the mosque.

The restoration program was part of the renewal of this belt.  We learned theoretically how arches were built at the construction faculty, but we did not have practice in stone arch construction.  We had a meeting with the masters about how to restore the arches.  As a result, we were going to strike a wood buckle licking the belt from below.  Later, we would remove the belt slowly and get notes about the construction techniques and we would make use of these notes in rebuilding it.  We made the mold.  We started to move the belt lock removal.  When we removed the stone, we found a glass bottle placed in a cylindrical cavity at the junction point of the two stones.  There was a rolled up white paper in the bottle.  We opened the bottle and looked at the paper.  He was writing something in Ottoman language.  We immediately found an expert and had them read.  This was a letter and it was written by Mimar Sinan.

In the letter, “The life of the stones that make up this arch is approximately 400 years.  You will want to renew this belt as these stones will have decayed during this period.  You will probably not be able to rebuild this arch, as the building techniques will also change.  Here I am writing this letter to tell you how to build this arch. ”  was writing.  In his letter, Koca Sinan continued his explanations by saying where they brought the stones they built from Anatolia and explained the construction of the arch in detail. Another version of this legend is told for the Süleymaniye Mosque. “A few years ago, the Süleymaniye Mosque is in danger of demolition.  understood to remain.  If no solution is found, the entire mosque will be demolished in a short time.

The entire carrying load of the mosque is on its belts.  Likewise, when the keystone of the belt was removed, this note came out.  Mimar Sinan explains: "Now that you have found this note, the keystone of one of the arches is worn and you do not know how to change it."  Big Sinan was explaining, gradually, how to change the keystone. The delegation did exactly what Sinan said. Suleymaniye mosque was thus saved. This letter is now hiding in the Topkapı Palace. "I wonder if there will be other letters or even a book under the columns in the future?"  When you hear this beautiful story, if you think that today's engineers and architects are a little incompetent and the master has even calculated this issue, you are free to do it. But "I wonder if there is a mistake here?"  If you say, here are a few reasons: Until now, nobody from the team that found the letter has been named.

Although it was said that it was described in a television program, no such image was broadcast from the TV archives.  It is claimed that the original of the letter was in Topkapı Palace, but there is no document showing that such a letter was included in the Topkapı Palace archive.  As a matter of fact, every document in TopkapıSaray must have an archive number. Photographs of such a letter would definitely be published and the people who found it would be famous. This important document would make a tremendous impression in the world, just like the Piri chief map.  The name of the mosque is Åžehzade Mosque. It is possible to reach documents about the restoration of Åžehzade Mosque.  When we examine the report of the restoration that started in 1990, we see that there is no change of archollite stone as in the legend.  In addition, it is understood from this report that the team doing the restoration is not inexperienced, but a team that does its job very professionally. The drawing used in the legend does not belong to Mimar Sinan.  Even the drawing belongs to Süleymaniye Mosque, not to Åžehzade Mosque.

This drawing was drawn in 1/200 scale in accordance with today's technical drawing rules.  The real owner of the drawing is the late architect Ali Saim Ülgen, who has worked on historical artifacts for many years.  When the drawing is looked closely, it is seen that the writings on it were written in modern Turkish, not Ottoman.  Someone made some calculations by adding on the original drawing.  The lifespan of the stones is more than 400 years.  There are thousands of years old structures still standing.  Not 400, but 450 years have passed.  As has been said, the keystones of all Mimar Sinan's buildings would have to be changed. Also, Mimar Sinan did not have a laboratory to test the life of the stone.  For this reason, it examines the old stone structures;  He chose according to the lifespan, strength and weight of the stones used in the past.  Arch-making is well known to stone masons.  Basic information about this type of building technique is learned through the relationship between master and apprentice.

Nowadays, it appeared to Mimar Sinan was born and brought up as Agirnas' t Türkiye'ninbirçok spot and skilled masons are actually following the advice of Sinan mevcuttur.mim nasihatiyapıy for future architects and engineers then in general konulardır.tuhfetü'l self-Mi'marin'  .  "In fact, there is no more difficult art than architecture. Whoever is doing this honorable profession should not start the foundation unless the place of the building he is building is solid. Moreover, the foundation of the building must be prepared very carefully and must reach absolutely solid ground. In addition to the elephant legs, columns and seats, the dome, half  He should build the domes and arches with great care, and he should not be too rushed for the premise of early finishing. "  Ser Mimaran-ı Hassa Mimar Sinan.
