During a hot Summer day, we love ice cream.Especially the ones with the waffle cones. But how did we get these amazing ice cream cones? Well, a lot of people claimed that they invented ice cream cones but most historians says that originally the Muslim man, Earnest Hemwi was the inventor of ice cream cones. The other ones say that even if he wasn’t the inventor of ice cream cones he is the one that made it popular and the reason why we have it today.
Ernest Hamwi was born in1883 in Damascus, Syria. At some point in his life, he moved to America. Ernest Hamwiwould sell Zalabia which is a common dessert in the middle east. Ernest Hamwi made zalabia in a crisp wafer-like cookie form. In the 1904 St Louis World’s Fair in Ameria,Ernest Hamwi was selling his zalabia. The booth next to him was selling ice cream. It was a hot day so everyone was getting ice cream. Soon the ice cream seller ran out of all his dishes. He didn’t have anything to give the ice cream in. That is when Ernest Hamwi our Muslim hero came to the rescue. While his zalabia was still hot he rolled it into a cone. Ice Cream was put into the cone and BAMM that’s how we got our ice cream cones! In the fair, everyone loved the idea of the ice cream in the waffle cone.It became extremely popular in that St Louis World’s Fair. At that time people called ice cream cones, cornucopia! Day by day the ice cream cones became extremely popular and many quickly made this into a business. Later Ernest Hamwi founded the Missouri Cone Company in 1910 which later became the Western Cone Company. Oh and a fun fact! Now, around 150,000cones are made every day around the world. Let’s all thank Ernest Hamwi by asking Allah to give him Jannah. And next time when you see an ice cream cone remember that it’sbecause of our Muslim brother, Ernest Hamwi.
